Professor Mary Hickson PhD, Registered Dietitian (RD)

Professor Mary Hickson’s research includes sarcopenia and frailty, hospital nutritional care, nutrition in older people and dietetic practice.

Professor Hickson qualified as a dietitian in 1989 from the University of Surrey, UK. Mary started to specialise in nutritional care of elderly people in 1993, working in elderly mental health, community services and acute medical care.

In 1998, she began a study to investigate ways to improve nutritional care on acute elderly medicine wards, which led to her doctorate in 2002, with Imperial College London.

In 2016 Mary took up a chair in dietetics at Plymouth University where she leads research within the Dietetics, Human Nutrition and Health research group.

Alison Smith, Dietitian

Alison qualified as a Dietitian more than 20 years ago, and for the last 7 years has been working as a Prescribing Support Dietitian within a Clinical Commissioning Group. Alison's role focusses on appropriate prescribing of all products relating to nutrition, with a particular remit for appropriate prescription of oral nutritional supplements and appropriate identification and treatment of malnutrition. Alison's particular interests include malnutrition, care homes, dysphagia, dementia, frailty, sarcopenia, pressure ulcers and end of life.

Alison is the chair of the Older People Specialist Group of the British Dietetic Association (BDA). Alison is a Specialist Adviser for the Care Quality Commission, taking part in care home inspections and advising inspectors on appropriate nutritional care, and also the chair of the Department of Health Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances.
