The webinar delivered by Nirouz Zarroug, dietitian, discusses the significance of dietary fibre in supporting patients with acute illnesses, emphasising its benefits and practical application in clinical settings. The presenter has extensive experience in acute care and fibre research, advocating for its inclusion in dietary management.
Nirouz introduces the types of dietary fibre and explains it can be divided into soluble and insoluble types, each serving unique roles in gut health and disease prevention such as heart disease and colorectal cancer. Short-chain fatty acids produced from soluble fibre fermentation play a crucial role in gut health and can alleviate symptoms like diarrhoea and constipation.
The primary role of the gastrointestinal tract is the digestive process and diet & nutrition is key for influencing the environmental factors that mediate the composition and metabolic function of the gut microbiota.
Nirouz discusses the impact of many clinical conditions with overlapping gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea and constipation. She provides some insight into how fibre may impact on these symptoms in clinical conditions.
Nirouz introduces partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) as an effective fibre supplement for managing acute care conditions. PHGG can be used alongside enteral feed formulas to help manage gastrointestinal symptoms.
The need for more research on the impacts of fibre in acute settings is emphasised, alongside practical recommendations for implementation.
