At the end of the presentation, you should have an understanding of the following questions:
1) What is cognitive dysphagia?
2) Where might you see cognitive dysphagia?
3) What are cognitive feeding behaviours?
4) What are some practical strategies on how to support those with cognitive feeding behaviours?
Multiple studies have found links between cognitive impairment and dysphagia, with cognition being found to have the largest impact on dysphagia in the brain injury population. Further studies have found that cognitive impairment is a predictive factor for dysphagia in Parkinson’s Disease and studies indicate that 60% of dementia care home population will go on to develop dysphagia at some point in the disease progression.
Through working in a community setting, speech and language therapists Lucy and Ellie found recurring patterns in the referrals they received, especially in the care home population. They noted that similar information and advice was given multiple times and that quality of life for the people with dysphagia is significantly impacted by subsequent changes to oral intake. This identified a need to guide, educate and support people with dementia and their loved ones and carers.
This webinar aims to help you understand how to identify and offer support with practical strategies on how to manage someone with a cognitive dysphagia.
