Advancing the Management of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy: Human Milk Oligosaccharides and Immune Development Webinar
4 CreditsThe first 1,000 days of life are a window of opportunity to set solid foundations for infants’ future health. This period is a time of rapid physiological change and plasticity with significant potential for lasting effects.1 It is also a period of heightened vulnerability.2
Infants are born with a functionally immature intestine3 and a developing gut microbiota4 and immune system5.
Cow’s milk protein allergy is an immune-mediated disease6 associated with an increased gut permeability and altered gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis)7-9 which can disrupt immune system maturation and can result in long-term health consequences10.
Human milk oligosaccharides, a major component of breast milk11, have an important immune-nurturing role.11,12 Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition and should always be supported.13
New research is showing that the addition of two structurally identical HMO to infant formula helps to protect them from infections and reduce related antibiotic use14-15. This is likely in part through their effects on the gut microbiome of young infants16.
